Last Week's Training

My schedule has been so busy that blogging and internet surfing has become a luxury. I guess that is a good thing because that means I'm working. Although much like many of you who train as a profession, burn out can come quickly when you're waking up at 5am every morning and working to 7 or 8 at night. I definitely feel like my body is naturally wanting to train less, conserve energy and eat more. The goal for this year is to try and find ways to BALANCE out my life more. The older I get I realize that life is not just about making money or working your hardest (although both are very important), finding ways to spend more time with my family and friends, read, travel and just enjoy the beautiful city of San Diego seems more and more desirable.

Either way, I must thank God for the opportunities he has given me, an AMAZING wife, great business and good health. I guess I'm getting more sentimental in the aging process :)

5am to 7/8pm? You gotta knock that stuff off, buddy. Take it from me--I've walked SEVERAL miles in those shoes. Hire some other trainers, raise your fees, learn to say "no," or some odd combination of the three. You will get old before your time the rate your going. Again, I know...Burnout is just around the corner and he's looking for you. Plus with that schedule, you'll not only not have the time to start a family if you want, but you also won't have the energy!

Call me, we'll talk if you want to.

Nice insight and great reflection. I like the idea of balance...life is too short not too enjoy the fruit of your labor.

BALANCE my friend! You just have to learn to say no. You can't train everybody and there is always another client who wants your time and energy. You HAVE to learn tofind some balance in your day or burnout is inevitable. And having a realistic and balanced workout schedule is key.
It's a marathon my sprinting friend, not a sprint,lol.
Geoff is right, hire another trainer.

Thanks Geoff. I did raise my prices and am in the process of getting the two other trainers busier. It's not easy though. So many people who are referred to us want to see either myself or Yoana and not another trainer. The challenge is that we have a hard time convincing them to train with someone else. But you are correct. This is a skill I must get better at because I am burning myself out.

Joe, I definitely need to enjoy the fruits of our labor a bit more. Life is too short to work without play.

Mark,

You hit the nail on the head. I have a difficult time saying "NO". That's ultimately what it boils down to. That is a primary goal of mine this year to get other trainers super busy so I don't have to pick up the slack. It's just too strenuous and it destroys my body.

thanks for the advice brothers!

franz,

lol, thats what happens when you are a great trainer, people only want to see you! but you can't help people if you burn out.I always keep that in mind. I could train more than six people a day if I had too but how long could I keep that schedule without burning out? not long, especially if it impacted my rejuvenation( my training and recovery)
everything has a price and sometimes the price is NOT making more money.

Raise your prices again then. And have different price levels for you and your trainers. Obviously, yours will be higher, possibly much higher. Since you are instructing your trainers, you can assure potential clients who want to train with you, but cannot, that they are in good hands with your trainers because of course, they're under your tutelage.

Then again, you could just raise your rates to $100+ per hour and train 6-8 hours per day. That's 3000-$4000 per week. Not too shabby. If both you and Yoana do that, that's close to $25K+ per month. Do you think you could live off that?

Geoff,

that's basically what I am charging. Just trying to adjust to a new mortage, an aggresive savings plan and for our future.

But, with that being said, it wouldn't be a bad idea.
